It offers a very successful full diploma only IB Program within the context of a college preparatory school for students of all ability levels. Students living in the attendance area or anywhere within the Chicago city limits can make application to Lincoln Park’s Magnet Programs, which include the International Baccalaureate Program, an Honors/Double Honors/Advanced Placement Program, and a Performing Arts program with concentrations available in drama, band, string instruments, and vocal music. Special consideration for admission is extended to students from other IB schools and to international students from the business and diplomatic communities. French Bilingual students can participate in a special program that can include preparation for ‘the Premier’ of the French Baccalaureate in addition to college preparatory, AP, and/or IB classes. All students with special needs are supported in their college preparatory classes by a full learning disabilities program. In both May 2005 and May 2006 Newsweek Magazine ranked Lincoln Park High School the number one high school in the state of Illinois and 31st and 30th respectively in the United States. Currently Lincoln Park has over 2100 students. Of that number, approximately 450 participate in the IB program. Lincoln Park’s student population represents Chicago’s demographic diversity – racially, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically. . In the school as a whole students come from over 90 countries and speak more than 80 different languages at home. A significant number of students in the IB program were born in other countries, are first-generation in this country, or the children of internationals. Lincoln Park students celebrate their diversity of interests, skills, and cultures and miss it when they go on to university. Students say that no matter what you are like or how unusual your interests are, you can find someone who shares those at Lincoln Park. Within this diverse context students acquire insight and leadership skills needed in a global society as together they learn, play, laugh, creatively work in groups on authentic tasks, and reflect on common experiences . Personal excellence, a willingness to challenge oneself, creativity, inventiveness, and a can-do spirit are at the core of Lincoln Park’s culture. A wide variety of extracurricular activities (50) and interscholastic sports opportunities (currently 26) are available for all students. IB students are active in sports, drama, music, art, school clubs, and local organizations. Many do community service beyond the CAS requirement and are active in their individual churches, synagogues, and mosques. In addition to their work in their classes, all Lincoln Park students participate in a number of academic competitions in writing, history, experimental science, literature, social issues, world languages, and the fine and performing arts and many have gone on to the national and international levels of these competitions. Every year, the boys’ and girls’ athletic teams win division and sectional championships, and the music program regularly earns superior ratings in competitions and is ranked as one of the 10 top music programs in the state of Illinois. However while the programs are successful, the emphasis is on exploring new possibilities and doing one’s personal best. The IB program at Lincoln Park was established in 1980 and for over twenty years approximately 89% of the students have been awarded the full International Baccalaureate Diploma. Lincoln Park enjoys an outstanding record of college acceptances.
