Highlights of Friends 2009-10 Activities
  • Ad Hoc Executive Committee
    • Continued to promote efforts to enhance LPHS as a unified community, including co-sponsoring the second annual all-school fundraiser; supporting BOP and continuing to support the "Donate Your Used Musical Instruments" campaign; chaperoning at school events; and supporting LPHS teams.  Held a joint meeting with Payton and Northside Prep Friends organizations to continue to share best practices and fundraising ideas.
  • Communications Committee, Sally Fansler
    • Expanded parent participation and increased the circulation of our newsletter, The Linc, to provide parents a forum for obtaining information about LPHS activities. Enhanced the use of our email base to communicate with parents through periodic news flashes.  Working with LPHS teacher Aimee Smith, provided continuous information and updates for the LPHS and Friends websites.
  • Fundraising Committee, Anne Remien/Kelly Solaksubasi
    • Raised over $25,000 in Pride Fund contributions, which includes one Corporate Sponsor donation directed to fund new uniforms for the Girls Basketball team, and about $4,800 (Friends' share of approximately $15,000 in net proceeds) from the second all-school fundraiser. Friends' funds will be redistributed to the school's academic departments based on their Wish Lists (look for details on the Friends' Web page). Funded a beautiful locking, wood display case in the Library from Leave a Legacy funds. Raised money for LPHS by promoting rebate programs through OneCause, GoodSearch, Target, and Office Depot.  Helped promote and support Climate Cycle effort with teacher Deborah Gamson. Launched a first time effort for US Cellular campaign to try and gain support to win $100,000 in prize money. LPHS reached 25th position.  
  • Parent Resource Committee, Holly Rumple (Vice President)
    • Hosted speakers to discuss preparing for the college admission process and financing college, our own teachers Ms. Rucker, on preparing for the college admission process, Deborah Gamson, on efforts that won LPHS the Climate Cycle challenge (roof top solar panels), and Mr. Hewlett on the LPHS Service Learning program.  We also hosted the authors of the book “How to Walk to School” (Jacqueline Edelberg and Susan Kurland). Co-sponsored with the Department of College and Career Preparation the third LPHS College Essay-Writing Seminar for LPHS students.
  • Membership Committee, Carol Sites Turner/Patricia Egipciaco
    • Recruited 143 members and promoted Friends at orientation and report card pick ups.
  • Social and Civic Committee, Martha Herzog/Beatriz Trigueros
    • Hosted our annual Teacher and Staff Welcome Back Breakfast, Freshman Parent Welcome Party, and the Teacher and Staff Appreciation Luncheon. New this school year, we also sponsored three fundraising efforts: a Parents’ Night Out cocktail reception at Le Colonial, a Cubs Walk-a-thon, and Italian Ice sale at Report Card pick-up.  Proceeds from the three fundraising events sponsored by the Social committee raised over $16,000 in additional monies distributed to LPHS.  Continued the Parent Patrol.  A retirement luncheon was organized for outgoing Principal Dr. Bessie Karvelas and Assistant Principals Ms. Wanda Kramer, and Ms. Carol Widegren, representatives from Friends presented crystal apples to each as tokens of our appreciation and recognition of their dedication to LPHS these many years.
Highlights of Friends 2008–2009 Activities
  • Ad Hoc Executive Committee: Promoted efforts to enhance LPHS as a unified community, including supervising the assembly of over 2,200 orientation packages for the 2008-09 academic year; co-sponsoring the first all-school fundraiser; supporting the Band and Orchestra Parent's silent auction and co-sponsoring the "Donate Your Used Musical Instruments" campaign; fitting the Concert Band's uniforms; chaperoning at school events; and supporting efforts to obtain equipment for the girls' workout room. Held two joint meetings with Payton and Northside Prep Friends organizations to share best practices.
 
  • Communications Committee: Expanded parent participation and increased the circulation of our newsletter, The Linc, to provide parents a forum for obtaining information about LPHS activities. Enhanced the use of our email base to communicate with parents through periodic news flashes.
 
  • Fundraising Committee: Raised over $30,000 from Pride Fund contributions, corporate sponsorships, and Friends’ share of revenues from the first all-school fundraiser, and redistributed the money to the school’s academic departments for purchases that included technology upgrades, a LPHS literary magazine, and library books. Raised money for LPHS by promoting rebate programs.
 
  • Membership and Parent Resource Committees: Recruited 123 members. Hosted speakers to discuss preparing for the college admission process and financing college. Co-sponsored with the Department of College and Career Preparation the second LPHS College Essay-Writing Seminar.
