LPHS Orchestra Updates

Our first concert of the year is just a few short weeks away! I'm so excited for our students to get a chance to showcase the fantastic work they've done so far this year. The concert will be happening in the LP Freshman Gym, and you're all welcome to attend, there's no fee for entrance.

Fall Orchestra Concert

Monday, October 16th - 6:00pm

LPHS FB Gym - 2001 N Orchard St. Chicago

Here are a few important details:

Dress Code: Black pants, black blouse/collared shirt (with sleeves to at least your elbows), black shoes. If you choose to wear a skirt or dress, we please ask that it be longer than knee length.

Call Time: Students should arrive back at LP no later than 5:00pm on concert night. The orchestra room will be open between school and the concert for students that want to remain at school before the concert or want to come earlier in the afternoon. Students leaving after school must return by 5pm.

Instruments: If students have instruments at home, they should plan to use them for the concert, and are encouraged to bring them to school in the morning on Monday to use in class.

Volunteers: If you're interested in helping out at the concert, our parent booster organization BOP would love to hear from you! You can email BOP president Carmen Holley at [email protected] to let her know you're interested in getting involved! We're still looking for a couple more parent volunteers to help out during the concert

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know at [email protected]. I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Upcoming Orchestra Dates

Monday, September 11th - Parent Meeting & Ice Cream Social

  • The first meeting of the LPHS Band and Orchestra Parents group will be at 6:00 on Monday, September 11th, and you're all welcome to join! BOP is a non-profit dedicated to helping support band and orchestra at LP, and it's made up of parents just like you! We'll be meeting at LP in room FB180, and we'll also have a zoom link so you can tune in online.
  • Join us right beforehand at 5:30pm for an Ice Cream Social! We'll be getting together with parents and students before the BOP meeting, and we'd love to see you there!

Monday, October 16th - Fall Orchestra Concert

  • Our first performance of the year will be at 6:00pm on October 16th in the Freshman Gym. This concert will feature a short selection of music from each of our Orchestra ensembles! It'll be a great opportunity for students to showcase their work, and I'm so excited to everyone in the LP Orchestra community to come together. I'll send out more detailed info as the date gets closer, but make sure you have this date on your calendar!

Monday, December 11th - Winter Concert

  • Also make sure you have your calendars marked for our Winter Concert. It also starts at 6:00pm, but will be in our Auditorium. This will be all our ensembles first full-length concert, and will serve as our culminating summative activity for 1st semester!

A look inside our main orchestra/band room, FB180

Google Classroom & ASPEN

Make sure you're connected with your student's Google Classroom, as well as the Parent Portal on ASPEN.
  • Google Classroom is where you can find the course syllabus, and it's where I post assignments, announcements and materials. That's also where students can find our calendar and events information.
  • ASPEN is where students view their official grades, as well as their attendance. Families/caregivers can create their own logins to ASPEN's Parent Portal to view grade and attendance information. If you need help logging in, or never logged in before, please reach out and I'll be happy to help!

Practice Lab: Tuesdays After School

Starting tomorrow I'll be staying after school for our weekly Practice Lab. Students can stop by the orchestra room from Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 to get extra help from me, record play test assignments, or just practice on their own. All orchestra classes have received their first playing assignments of the year, and I want to make sure that students have all the support they need to have a successful start to the year!

Instrument Rental Information

I encourage all orchestra students to rent an instrument to practice at home, to help in their musical development. Since it involves an additional cost, I understand that not all families are able, but for those of you who are looking for a place to rent an instrument, here are my recommendations:
  • Quinlan and Fabish is a music store in the suburbs that makes stops here at LPHS. Students can rent an instrument by visiting their website QandF.com, and a representative will deliver the instrument to school for them to take home. If the instrument needs repairs, they are done free of charge, students just bring the instrument to school for pickup.
  • A440 is a music store in Roscoe Village, that has high-quality instruments for rent and purchase. I usually recommend A440 for more advanced students looking for nicer quality instruments and bows.
